We would have liked to write "MUSCADET" in capital letters next to Fred Niger's wines, but the conformity brigade got involved and a group of tasters judged that the wines were not representative of the style of the appellation.
Too bad because Fred, like a handful of other winemakers, has done a lot to make Muscadet wines recognized around the world. Some great tasters like Alexis Goujard or Pascaline Lepeltier even place them on the same level as the great Burgundies... This puts into perspective the prices sometimes considered exorbitant for the region.
Very great wines are produced in Muscadet and Fred Niger from the Domaine de l'Ecu is one of those winegrowers capable of getting the best out of these gneiss, granite and micaschist soils typical of this part of the Loire vineyard.
The estate also stands out for its multitude of vintages, sometimes from the trade like the Nobis vintage, a 100% Syrah vinified on the estate, and the quality of these agings with particular attention to the Amphorae.
You will notice the bottles with these labels inspired by church stained glass windows, the other mark of this surprising domain.
